“New Yorkers love Marathon Sunday, but taxpayers cannot be expected to subsidize a wealthy non-government organization like the New York Road Runners to the tune of $750,000,” MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Catherine Sheridan said in a statement. The New York Road Runners, which organizes the race, says that the marathon already generates millions of dollars for the city’s economy, and that the amount MTA proposed would make the race less affordable. “We value our partnership with all the City and State agencies that allow us to stage all of our events, including the marathon,” NYRR said in a statement. The MTA recently voted to approve congestion pricing in New York City, making it the first US city to charge such a toll. Despite the approval and expected implementation of the tolling plan, multiple lawsuits, such as one spearheaded by New Jersey Gov.

New York CNN —Last year wasn’t the most lucrative for Wall Street bankers, but their bonus payouts still easily trounced US median household income. The average Wall Street bonus for 2023 was $176,500, according to estimates that will be released Tuesday morning by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. Wall Street earnings last year were mixed, and merger and acquisition activity was underwhelming. Nevertheless, a little perspective: The average Wall Street bonus, which comes on top of the nearly half-a-million-dollar average Wall Street salary, was itself almost 2.5 times higher than the median US household income of $74,580, according to Census data for 2022. Beyond bringing in tax revenue for government coffers, Wall Street workers contribute substantially to the local Gotham economy.

People wait in a queue with cans to collect drinking water amid an ongoing water crisis in Bengaluru on March 14, 2024. She said it's the worst water crisis she has experienced in her 40 years in the neighborhood. Water levels are running desperately low, particularly in poorer areas, resulting in sky-high costs for water and a quickly dwindling supply. City and state government authorities are trying to get the situation under control with emergency measures such as nationalizing water tankers and putting a cap on water costs. The crisis was a long time coming, said Shashank Palur, a Bengaluru-based hydrologist with the think tank Water, Environment, Land and Livelihood Labs.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A top Democratic Virginia lawmaker vowed Wednesday to keep language enabling a proposed relocation by the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals to Alexandria out of the state budget lawmakers will take up later this week. Glenn Youngkin's plan to lure the teams across the Potomac River with a $2 billion development district featuring a new arena. Moving forward, if the arena is excluded from the budget, Youngkin has a few options. Virginia governors have the ability to seek amendments to legislation, so he could attempt to put the arena language back in the budget. Democrats, who control both General Assembly chambers, could lose Youngkin’s support for some of their own priorities if they kill the arena deal.

There's nothing like a moribund IPO market to create a pleasant backdrop for a bull run. Hot on the heels of the Reddit deal is the expiration of the IPO lockup period for Arm Holdings on March 12. The city’s homeless shelter system often places newcomers in the wrong settings. It includes 37 dedicated mental health shelters that are staffed with psychiatrists and social workers to offer treatment — at a cost to taxpayers of about $250 million a year. The system relies on low-paid workers who lack the mental health training and tools to identify psychiatric issues in newcomers. One in four people with severe mental illness in the shelter system were not placed in a mental health shelter, state auditors found in 2022. One 41-year-old man who should have been placed in a mental health shelter was instead shuttled to other types of shelters as his mental health deteriorated.

NEW YORK (AP) — GOP front-runner Donald Trump marked President Joe Biden 's 81st birthday on Monday by releasing a letter from his physician that reports the former president is in “excellent” physical and mental health. Dr. Bruce A. Aronwald, a New Jersey physician who says he has been Trump’s doctor since 2021 and most recently examined him in September, reported that Trump's “physical exams were well within the normal range and his cognitive exams were exceptional." The report comes as age has emerged as a key issue of the 2024 election, which could find Trump and Biden, the country's oldest president, facing off once again. It takes the truth and moves it in a different direction.”While in the White House, Trump's doctors offered a more complete picture of his health following annual physicals that included numbers and test results. Trump continues to brag about the results to this day.

A single New York City police detective accused of trying to close murder cases by concocting false witness testimony and coercing confessions has cost taxpayers $110 million in settlements to more than a dozen people whose convictions were overturned after some had spent decades in prison. People investigated by the former detective, Louis N. Scarcella, have already received a total of $73.1 million in settlements from New York City and another $36.9 million from the state, according to the city and state comptroller offices. The $110 million went to 14 different defendants, including a woman who died a few years after her release, a man who was just 14 when he was arrested on murder charges and a man whose settlement went to his mother because he died in prison at age 37. One man, let out of prison after 23 years, had a severe heart attack just two days later. But no other New York Police Department officer has ever come close to costing taxpayers as much, lawyers involved in the cases say.

Times reporters spent more than a year examining how often homeless mentally ill people under the care of the city have committed acts of violence. The lack of public information about the incidents made it difficult to evaluate about a quarter of the cases. Still, the examination identified 94 instances in the past decade in which breakdowns of the city’s social safety net preceded the violence, sometimes by just days or hours. A 23-year-old whose outpatient treatment team stood by as he became increasingly violent, doing little to intervene. Taken together, the 94 cases offer the fullest picture yet of how, where and why the safety net has broken down.

CNN —Investigators are working to determine who is responsible for a massive fire over the weekend that has forced the indefinite closure of part of Los Angeles’ Interstate 10, as fire officials say the blaze was likely arson. Residents who are impacted have been urged to take public transit, work from home or plan for significant traffic delays. Investigators have sifted through the fire’s rubble in search of evidence and are working with Los Angeles firefighters to canvass the surrounding neighborhoods for potential witnesses and video footage, the fire marshal added. Firefighters responded to reports of the fire around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at a storage yard scattered with pallets, trailers and vehicles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Gavin Newsom signed two major pieces of legislation Thursday to transform the state's mental health system and address the state's worsening homelessness crisis, putting them both before voters in 2024. The Democratic governor needs voters' approval because he wants to borrow billions of dollars through a bond to pay for the proposals. It would mark the first major update to the state's mental health system in 20 years. “The days of looking away are gone.”Voters in 2004 approved a special tax on millionaires that has been used to fund mental health programs. [1/2] New York City Mayor Eric Adams delivers a speech during a meeting with migrants, community leaders, and mayors from the Mixteca region, in Puebla, Mexico October 5, 2023. That New York City's mayor has traveled thousands of miles to make his case highlights how the latest wave of migrants is reshaping the immigration debate among some Democratic leaders. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been busing thousands of migrants north to New York, Chicago and other Democratic-controlled cities. They have said his remarks last month that the migrant crisis will "destroy New York City" are inflammatory. To counter this, the city should be making its own videos in the languages of the migrants traveling north, Goldfein said.
